College Financial Aid seems like a huge barrier... we need help?

Daughter is a senior this year, and we are trying to find a college that we feel comfortable with and that she likes. Do we need to acquire financial aid before meeting with college or after?

    Hi mrs.j,

FAFSA's homepage allows you to see the deadline for filing for your state at this link: Student Aid Deadlines - FAFSA on the Web - Federal Student Aid

The results note that each college also has their own deadline for filing for FAFSA. I would recommend you research that with the individual colleges you're looking into. For my college, the deadline seems to be shortly after the last class registration closes.

Talking about financial aid, the government presented its new "shopping sheet" financial aid form on Tuesday, July 24. The feds say that the new form will make student loan shopping more transparent and understandable. The Federal Government is entreating the nation's universities and university to make the form normal by the 2013-2014 school terms. Article source: Financial aid "shopping sheet".

Well, that's cool. Student loans seemed pretty predatory before now, so any extra transparency is an improvement.
