Tips for Staying Active This Busy Holiday Season

You know how it is. The turkey has barely been digested, and you're already starting to make your Christmas baking lists. We all get a little food-focused around the holidays - even the kiddos. But there is one sure-fire way to make sure that those extra "trimmings" don't take their toll, and that is to STAY ACTIVE.

It can be extra hard to make time for physical activity in the holiday season, so here are a few fun ideas to help the whole family get moving.

  1. Create a holiday "field day" where activities include a snowman-dressing contest, an ornament substituted for an egg in a relay, frisbees tossed through the antlers of your outdoor decorations, and seeing which one of you can hula hoop for the whole duration of the "12 Days of Christmas."
  2. Do you participate in a neighborhood caroling activity? Challenge your family to race each other from house to house with the winner getting to choose the next carol.
  3. When doing holiday shopping together, have your child or teen locate the farthest parking spot and grab it! Use that extra walking time to share with your teen your favorite holiday traditions as a child.
  4. Embrace any of the cultural holiday celebrations unfamiliar to you by learning a traditional African dance for Kwanzaa, create a Gelt treasure hunt for Hanukkah, or recreate the procession for Las Posadas or Santa Lucia Day.
  5. Get your homeschoolers involved in local athletics opportunities. Aren't sure what opportunities are available in your state for homeschoolers? Check out our new High School Homeschool Athletics Directory at LetsHomeschoolHighschool.com.
