Homeschooling Laws and High School

As a parent who has homeschooled my children from kindergarten through high school, I pretty much thought I knew everything there was to know about my state laws regarding homeschooling. But then, when recently sharing the homeschool state laws with a new homeschooling friend, I noticed something that I had never paid attention to before...a subject that is required to be taught in the high school years. Thankfully, it was a subject we had definitely covered, but it surprised me that there were high-school-specific homeschooling laws at all!

For instance, did you know that...

  • in North Dakota, homeschoolers are required to cover health education including physiology, hygiene, disease control, and the nature and effects of alcohol, tobacco, and narcotics?
  • in Hawaii, homeschoolers must participate in the statewide testing program?
  • Pennsylvania homeschoolers are required to school for 990 hours each year at the secondary level?
  • in Louisiana, homeschooled high schoolers must study the Federalist Papers?
LetsHomeschoolHighschool.com has recently researched all the laws relating to high school homeschoolers and has gathered them into a single table for your reference: High School Homeschooling Laws By State.  Take a few minutes this week and check out the requirements for your state to see if there are any laws that might apply to your homeschooled high schooler.
